"I thought I would drop you a line to let you know that after just 4 short sessions with my 8 week Beagle pup “Archie” he can now sit and stay on command and without hesitation. Your step-by-step training sessions are easy to understand for me and Archie. I am so proud of him and myself. Your book makes looking after him a real joy. Thank you so much."

Dear Beagle Lover

How would you like the perfect Beagle – well-behaved and happy - in just 90 days? A Beagle that really listens to what you want, respects you and is a joy to own?

And wouldn’t you feel great if you could achieve this in a way that is totally risk-free, stress-free and fun for both you and your dog – and takes just two 10 minute sessions a day of your time?

If so, I know you’ll find this letter to be extremely valuable because what I’m about to tell you will blast away many common misconceptions about this special breed and reveal the astonishing truth: namely, that there is a right way and a wrong way to getting the best from, and for, your Beagle.

Perfect family pet or stubborn, destructive tearaway?

Hi, my name’s Julia Sargent. I’m not a professional dog trainer or anything fancy but I am mad about Beagles and share my life with Honey, a beautiful lemon and white bitch.

If you’re anything like me, I’m guessing that what attracted you to Beagles in the first place was a combination of two things: first that Beagles are the most adorable looking dogs in the whole World, and second the commonly shared view that – with their compact size and happy-go-lucky temperament – Beagles make the perfect family pet.

For me, this amazing combination made the question as to whether to buy my own Beagle a no-brainer. But, as I soon found out, all is not quite as it seems…

Okay, there’s no doubting that Beagles are the most adorable dogs: with those big brown eyes, floppy ears, striking colours and happy wagging tail…Who can resist? But what few people will tell you is that these dogs have distinct behaviour patterns hard-wired into their brains that make them very different from any other dog.

Or, to put it another way,

If you fail to understand what makes your Beagle tick,
you’ll be tearing your hair out with frustration.

I know, because I found out the hard way.

Allow me to go back to the beginning…

I first brought Honey home when she was only 7 weeks old. I’d always had dogs in the family as a child (although never a Beagle) and I applied exactly the same training methods to Honey that I remembered my parents using with our family dogs.

An all-too-common problem

Imagine my shock and frustration when, far from becoming the delightful, happy and well-behaved pet I’d always longed for, Honey became stubborn, destructive and, increasingly, just plain naughty.

In the first 6 months alone, she:

  • Urinated (and worse) all over my floors on pretty much a daily basis, even though I sternly told her off. I used newspaper and even special training pads, but nothing seemed to work

  • Ripped up my entire kitchen floor

  • Chewed her way through several pairs of shoes, a garden bench, my daughter’s favourite Barbie doll, a shoe rack, a mobile phone and 3 remote controls, despite the fact that I gave her plenty of toys of her own

  • Annoyed my neighbours with constant whining and howling

  • Transformed my garden into something that looked like the surface of the moon

  • Frequently ran away when I let her off the leash and would not come back

  • Climbed onto a table, licked all the cream off my daughter’s birthday cake and ate half the party food – 15 minutes before the party started

  • Turned over my garbage (on several occasions) and helped herself to the contents, cutting her mouth once on a tin can and costing me an expensive vet’s bill

  • Growled at me if I sat too close to her on the bed or couch and refused to get down when I asked her to

  • Constantly begged for food whenever she was near anyone eating

  • Started growling and nipping my children when they tried to play with her

Sound familiar? If you're already a beagle owner, I’m prepared to bet my bottom dollar that by now you’re beginning to mutter “Tell me about it!” because what I know now, is that all of these behaviours are very common in Beagles.

If you’re not yet a Beagle owner, you might find Honey’s list of escapades quite amusing but, I can tell you, I was at my wit’s end. Honey was making my life a misery and I felt I couldn’t trust her with anything. And when she started biting my children, I knew something had to be done.

I started by looking in almost all the corner bookstores around. I found many books authored by so-called ‘dog experts’, bought them happily and started reading. But when I applied the tips given, many of them just didn’t seem to work.

Most of the books I read didn’t work…because they were
dog training books, NOT Beagle training books!

I quickly came to the conclusion that either Honey was a doggy freak or these so-called dog experts couldn’t possibly have ever had a Beagle of their own. And desperate though I was, I wasn’t ready to give up on Honey yet so I chose to start the long process of trying to find out more about Beagles, and here’s what I did:

  • Over the course of a few months I tracked down and communicated with 236 Beagle lovers around the World, using internet forums and chat rooms to get their input and learn from their experiences

  • I spent many evenings in front of my computer searching for and reading every article I could find about Beagles

  • I spent time with 4 professional dog trainers who had specific experience of training Beagles and were able to give me the low-down on Beagle behaviour problems and how to cure them and also simple but effective methods to specifically train Beagles to sit, stay, lay down, come and more, and

  • I spoke to my vet and local veterinarian training hospital who gave me great advice on keeping a Beagle healthy and how to prevent and cure common (and less common Beagle illnesses and diseases.

It was hard work, but boy was it worth it – and what an eye-opener!

I quickly found out from many other beagle owners that I wasn’t alone with my frustrations,
which was a huge relief to me – and them.

Puppy Dog Eyes
Beagles can be very manipulative and are a lot smarter than they look. Don’t get taken in by their innocent-looking faces or let them walk all over you, no matter how much their eyes look like they are truly sorry!
Anne Smith, Devon, UK

And what I discovered from the dog trainers was a real surprise. You see, it turns out Beagles aren’t always the easy option so many of us are led to believe. What I hadn’t realised is that beagles have distinct behaviour patterns and that if these aren’t acknowledged, taken into account and dealt with in the right way, a beagle can quickly become a stubborn, destructive and hostile pet. I had been doing it all wrong – and I can’t tell you how guilty I felt.

The good news is that through my research, I also discovered that there is a simple, effective and kind way of communicating with and training your beagle that taps into the way their minds work and has them desperate to please you. The results are phenomenal and I was amazed: after only 10 days of consistently applying the knowledge I had learned, Honey was already becoming a different dog. She was so much happier and calmer and really listened to what I asked of her. Two months later and she was the happy, well-behaved and fun dog I had always dreamed of. I was so happy.

I knew then that I had to share the information I had learned with as many beagle lovers as possible so that these beautiful dogs and their owners wouldn’t have to go through the same stresses that Honey and I did. And so I wrote:

“Beagle Savvy: Learn How To Make Your Beagle Happy, Healthy and Obedient!”

Unlike many other dog books, ‘Beagle Savvy’ contains all the useful knowledge, advice and tips I learned from Beagle experts and Beagle lovers (like you and I), rather than just generic advice about dogs. It’s jam-packed with the most effective tips and techniques for looking after your Beagle.

Put simply, it contains everything you need to know about finding and living happily with your Beagle - whether it be a puppy that needs training or an older dog with behavioural problems.

At last, fast and effective solutions to common Beagle problems

‘Beagle Savvy’ is easy to read and understand with step-by-step instructions for looking after your Beagle.

  • When to give your Beagle attention and when to ignore him – and why this is critical to good behaviour

  • How to talk to your Beagle so he will listen – it’s all to do with tone of voice but does not involve shouting

  • How to show your Beagle who’s boss - just by the way you hold him

Teaching An Old Dog New Tricks
“My son sent me ‘Beagle Savvy’ as a birthday present. We have a 3 year old Beagle who is beautiful, charming, funny, loyal and loving but only does as she’s told when she feels like it. Having had 2 Beagles before, we assumed that this was part of their breed trait and just lived with her pulling on the lead, running off, scavenging food, etc. After all, their characters more than make up for this.

My husband laughed when I said that I was going to try and train Lucy to sit, walk to heel and come when she was called. But we worked through ‘Beagle Savvy’ a little each day, Lucy and I both learning as we went. Eventually our whole family used to gather for Lucy’s lessons – it became a family occasion and she loved it.

As I write this, Lucy is still beautiful, charming, funny, loyal and loving, but now she can sit, walk to heel and actually comes when she is called. 4 months ago if you had told me that I could obedience train a 3 year old Beagle I would have laughed like my husband did. You and Lucy proved us wrong.”

Top Of The Class
“We had been taking our new Beagle to obedience classes for 2 months without much success. The other dogs and their owners were doing really well but Petra is so head-strong and I am so inexperienced that we were still trying to master the basics. It was both frustrating and embarrassing.

We purchased ‘Beagle Savvy’ in the hope that you would be able to help. Help? You transformed our dog. After reading the chapter on Repetition and Reward, the penny dropped and we began again from the beginning. Her behaviour changed within 20 minutes and we made more progress after two 30 minute sessions than in the whole of the previous 2 months.

We have now passed out of the obedience class with flying colours and Petra won the trainers award for being “The most improved dog”. Thank you.

Great Play Mates
“I have a 5 year old boy and a very excitable 3 year old girl – they’re quite a handful! When I told my husband I wanted to get a Beagle puppy he thought I was mad, but I really wanted my kids to benefit from growing up with a dog and I needed a good excuse to do more exercise and lose a few pounds.

I knew I had to get it right from day one and so I bought and read ‘Beagle Savvy’ 3 weeks before “Samson” joined our family. Your advice made really good sense and it made such a difference to know that I could create an environment where I did not have to constantly watch over them all.

The children adore Samson and are learning so much about how to take care of him. We’re all getting much fitter and Samson is turning into a delightful dog. Thank you. Delaina Lloyd, San Diego, CA

  • Amazing value for money: While I was doing my research for this Beagle guide, I was shocked at the prices some of my competitors are trying to charge for their books about Beagles. Why not take a look yourself? I can tell you something, it’s not the kind of money I had available to spend.

The way I see it, I want as many people as possible to learn the kind and fun way to living happily with their Beagles. Beagles are such special dogs and it breaks my heart to hear stories from people who have become so frustrated and desperate that they’ve had their Beagle re-homed.

I want all Beagle owners to understand how the Beagle’s mind works - that there is a right way and a wrong way to looking after these beautiful dogs – so that fewer Beagles fall off the rails and so that all owners can experience the same pleasure and joy that I have experienced with my own dog.

With that in mind, it’s important to me that this guide is affordable for everyone. So I’m making no apologies for not offering any gimmicky discounts; the price you see is the price you pay…
